| | paper sharpening wheels Hey just a question,
I ordered a set of paper wheels that I plan to mount on a grinder I bought to use as a sharpening station. Has anyone ever tried using ultra fine diamond paste on one of these. In theory I think it ought to work...Or it may just make my tools disappear in a blink of an eye!
Let me know,

| | Re: paper sharpening wheels Paper wheels are the hardest of all the wheels, Too long in one spot and they do a concave number on the bevel..I have a wheel from England and the comment was Flat items, plane irons , #1 chisels, knives etc..As far as a honing material, go out and buy a three pound bar of knife makers compound to both hone and carry the friction generated heat away, ala the Koch method of sharpening..Nice part about the paper wheels is that you can use those anemic little $19.00 motors to turn the wheels because of their hardness.Since I don't have plane irons, I'll use the paper wheel to do really small tools, like 1/32 inch #10,and #11's.Before I put you to sleep...The wheel is supposed to turn away from you.. | | Re: paper sharpening wheels Thanks for the tips. I did reverse the rotation on my old grinder. If I like the way this system works I'll add a shaft with some felt and leather wheels. This is a new venture for me, generally I prefer to use stones.

| | Re: paper sharpening wheels Being the cheap guy that I am I went out to the shed the other day and made a wheel for my 6-inch grinder out of empress wood. It's not as hard as basswood but harder than balsa. I was really surprised at how acurate it worked out since I used a scroll saw and a hand drill to make it. I preped it with "Yellowstone" and it seems to work really well. Comments requested especially nays!

| | Re: paper sharpening wheels Reply to pin em down Hi Ho sliver..........Paper for flat, as stated. Felt for the round, except ,I like paper for the small.....The whole problem that is ignored by everyone is the heat build up .You don't play with the edge on the wheel, you press the edge in, and rotate. In the lenght of time it takes to say screw it,you should be done... As far as sharpening goes, you in Ohio, stop by, take you behind the garage, maybe freeze your hind end off in this weather, but, I'll teach you sharpening in about five minutes..The whole trick of power sharpening is NOT to over heat the tool...Yo Dave, the Santa in Chip Chats was to have been the second article, could not get Power sharpening done in time, right now, still on back burner due to Christmas items...I figure, a good DIY article and I'll sell the last of the felt wheels I have left Probabliy never will, because I have too much unfinished fun type material to finish, and I know how to sharpen.........Cordially Nad |
