Been thinking about the Denny Pete Ortel chisel myself.
Thomp, you are so right," everyday is Christmas to our Grandchildren". Two of mine has BD in Oct and they made out better than Christmas, I think, and the other in June and she made out like a bandit. |

| | Re: Palm chisels? Dave,
If your talking about the Ortel soft Vee, it is a neat little multi functional tool. Use it as a soft vee, on the flat as a left or right #1, small bites make it a gouge, left to right as you carve for beards etc. Also noticed a few guys in the club use it for hogging out.

I started with a Flexcut 5-piece basic gouge set: http://www.flexcut.com/products/cart...ategory_id=113 and wanted to expand after a couple of years. I got the bigger set: http://www.flexcut.com/products/cart...ategory_id=206 for my birthday last year and have been very well satisfied with the selection. I can use the rubber handle, just like the fixed handel on my original set, with any of the new gouges, or I can use the heavier wooden handle with a mallet and have much greater control with my gouges. I don't think the Flexcut set would work with a lot of heavy use on walnut or oak, but for basswood, it's great for muscle power or mallet.

| | Re: Palm chisels? Another recommendation for the Ortel tool -- I bought one 2-3 months ago and use it all the time. I knew I'd use it for roughing out -- which I do -- but I also use it for everything all the others here have mentioned. It's high on the list of tools I use the most.
Also -- you can now get them with a longer handle, too, if you prefer. I might have done that if I had known you could.
