Default numbers for back bent gouges

Can anyone explain what the numbers for back bent gouges mean? For example, is a #25 about the same (in reverse) as a #5 ?

Well I was just at a carving seminar this past weekend and we talked about that exact thing. The instructor, who was originally from Bosnia and was a professional carver there says the #25 is a #5 and a #23 is a #3 The number actually denotes that it is a back bent gouge and the second number denotes the sweep of the gouge. You are absolutely correct, at least according to him.

Gene... Thanks for the information. I've googled and tried to find an explanation with no luck so I really appreaciate it. I'm carving a diving helmut and want to get the right tool.

I checked my #25's last night and they are identical to my #5 straight gouges. Mike
