Default nicked gouge

I have a gouge that’s nicked in the middle of the edge. I need to take it down a bit on the bench grinder to take the nick out. I don’t have any stones and don’t want to invest in some at the moment. My question is, is it possible to get the edge back using sand paper? If so what grits should be used. 200 then 400 then 1000 etc??? I do have the basic strop that comes in the beginners kit sold at littleshavers.com. If it’s not possible then for now I’ll just send it to littleshavers.

Thanks,
Marty

yes, nicks can be made away with sandpaper, i do always with sandpaper now... i start with 180 grit, then 400, then 600, then 1200 then ready for stropping...

I just did it with a Flexcut #3 gouge--started with 240, went to 400, went to 1000 then stropped.

Wet/dry should do it--get it at the hardware or auto parts store. I keep it dry. You should do okay. Just make sure you and the edge even across the width of the tool by twirling back and forth as you go across the sandpaper.
