| | New Toy!! I don't know if this is the right place but I wanted to show you the new toy. My brother from Olathe Ks came down last night and brought the scroll saw he built for me. I sent him the plans along time back and he got it done. He said it was a real pain in the butt to build but kind of a challenge too. All together it cost me about 170.00 to build . Being the nice guy he is he didn't charge me labor. It is kind of a trick to run but works pretty good. Anyway it's pretty safe for a blind guy. If it hurts stop pedalling!! |

| | Re: New Toy!! Wow! Way cool Ron. I've been interested in pedal type human powered "power" equipment for a long time. This looks like a very cool design. Certainly safer than electric power equipment assuming there is no flywheel to drive it beyond your stopping. The "Beat a Dead Horse" thread has covered why I've been interested in more of a "neanderthal" approach to woodworking for years.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your new toy.

| | Re: New Toy!! I love the old tools. I used to sit and watch my Momma's feet while she pedaled on the Singer sewing maching. Wish we still had it.
An interesting note: when we were in China about 12 years ago we saw a store that sold nothing but treadle sewing machines. We forget how lucky we are to push a button and the electricity flows. |

| | Re: New Toy!! That's pretty cool Ron. I, also, am a fan of stomp powered equipment like pole lathes and the like. This is a new one for my eyes.
I hope you show us some of the results you are able to accommplish with it.

| | Re: New Toy!! After i bought my second scrollsaw i seen the plans for this saw, i wanted it but the wife was clutching the purse strings pretty tight. besides i didn't have room for a 3rd one.
i wondered if it could cut 2" basswood so i could keep cutting out carving patterns during the hurricanes and power outages here..
dose it take standard blades?
Ron i think if you have much strain on the arm and don't use it for a while the arm might bow so you might want to release tension daily ...
i still want to make one and a small treadle lathe,,
wonder if they have plans for a treadle bandsaw ha!

| | Re: New Toy!! I think if you built the scrollsaw you would be versed enough in the principles of the treadle to make a bandsaw....as for lathes, thought of a pole lathe myself and there are several plans and pictures out there for them. It would take some designing to get the blade to keep going around instead of back and forth or the bandsaw? |

If that had been the drive wheel for a band saw I think it would have taken a pretty good chunk of wood to bog it down. And the pully wheel on those old treadle sewing machines went around and the machine head changed the motion to an up and down one. |

| | Re: New Toy!! Really neat Ron.I can't wait to see what you produce with it.
Next you need one of those pedal lathes I've seen. I watched a guy turn all sorts of things with one,,I was mesmerized. This has to be so neat to use.You certainly are resourceful. An inspiration to us all.You actually take away all my excuses! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
