I always wondered why when you buy a $17.00 Flexcut or a $20.00 Denny they are sharp out of the box, but when you spend much more money on a tool that is supposed to be of higher quality it is not always sharpened. I never understood that.

Read my previous posts in this thread, maybe that will help. There are many carvers that carve in woods much harder than basswood and tools sharpened for basswood would either chip out or the edges would roll. Flexcut and Denny, among others target the basswood carver. Most of the old line tool makers target primarily the former. It's easy enough to reprofile them for basswood.

Reply from Traditional Woodcarver.

"As stated on the web site, please note that the tools only are machine sharpened and you will need to do the final sharpening/honing yourself. As such, there is no point in exchanging the knife and medium gouge. The V-Tool clearly looks damaged so just mail it back to us and we will gladly exchange it for you. Also, should you so wish you may mail all the tools back to us and we will refund you."

So, its settled but I have to say I am dissapointed that they think the detailed knife was an acceptable machine sharpened. Makes me want to return them all!!...and I dont even see an apology....am I expecting too much???
Ok Hormonal Pregnant Woman who is hungry is a bad combination

If it's what you expected, it's what you expected. You're the customer.

If you want to make sure every tool that you buy is sharp and carving ready when you open the package, the best way I know to guarantee that is to buy all your stuff from Rick. I've bought tools from some other folks who claim to sharpen them. They do, but not to the point where I didn't have to resharpen them to use them. Rick is the only one who sharpens them the way I like them. I don't mind sharpening them, but when somebody says they do and do half a job, that I mind. Nobody, flexcut and pfiel included, sell a tool that doesn't need a little improvement.
