Has anyone used the large strop that Woodcarvers Warehouse offers? I was wondering if there was anything different between it and regular leather strop.

james, i havent used that hone, but i made one 24" long and it quickly became my favorite as it gets the job done 3 times as fast,,,ha a little hard to store if im out of the carving area, but with a little flexcut gold and a few strokes it brings my straight razor knives back to sharp quickly

James, I made a long strop also, it really does speed up stropping. I get my leather from Tandy Leather, they are on the web, or you might have a local store. Dave PS- Hope your feeling better Thomas !! Last edited by Gulf Coast Handyman; 10-30-2008 at 08:57 PM. |

What type of leather do you use to make a strop?

I think it is cowhide, Iam sure there are others. The Tandy near me had pieces that were left over after cuts were made, I guess kinda like scrap pieces, they sell these for around $6.00 for a Lb. , I went thru a large box and picked out the ones that worked for me, all different sizes. They do have other kinds of leather, pig skin etc. Dave |

james, i used pigskin because its so thin and dont compress, if you use anything else use the rough side for the hone as it holds the compound better... i wouldn't suggest oil tanned leather.. it makes the compound gummy... gc Handyman, im doing as well as expected.. to early for tests and stints or bypass, but im feeling much better if my eyes would settle down from the abuse i put them through with high blood sugar...

I am not sure it makes a lot of difference what kind of leather...I have been using a "chrome" leather...I have bags of it...but once glued to a wood stick..it is plenty stiff.....not sure either about two long a stick as Thomas mentioned...for me at least, if its too long, I would have a tendency to roll the knife coming off the stroke...just me, difference strokes for different folks lol
