Default new knives

completed 3 new knives, these are made from old penknives people bring into the seniors center for me .i don't know way.and also a simple box to hold my knives.
not being a metalurgist i don't know how good the steel is but the knives were made in Germany.i have let them know that i will accept any straight razors.

Frank

p.s. i still hope to get one of ricks knives.

Frank love the knifes which one is the one you are sending me for Christmas or is it that native plaque .LOL. I would think that the German steel is really good if its the old stuff I know that Rick uses only German Straight razors for his knifes. I can tell you my friend that one of Ricks knives are worth a ten of any other knife I have ever used. Your look really nice though Frank.

Now Colin, That is no way to act! Hey frank, send one to little old poor mee! Please, pretty please with sugar on top. WHAAAA, WHAAA, WHAAAAA while holding my breath! Now that is the way to act Colin.

Seriously, great looking knives. Made a couple but not as good looking as yours. Need more practice on mine. Did get a straight edge gouge inserted in to a handle and it stay, so ,guess I am heading in the right spot. Hope to get one of Rick's next year if the little bride takes the hint.

Those are some fine looking knives! And the penknife blades should work just fine after some work to get rid of the second bevel. A lot of people think the old steel is somehow better than the new steel. Let me assure you that the cutlery steel being made today is much cleaner than the stuff made even 20-30 years ago. Carbon is the element that makes the steel hard and good cutlery steel needs a carbon content somewhere between .80% and 1.2%. If you make knives with steel low in carbon, it will not hold its edge. If you grind on steel that is already hard, remember to keep it cool by dipping the blade in water every couple of seconds. If it gets blue, you ruined the temper.

Be careful, knifemaking can take over your free time if you're not careful.

Frank, the farmhouse you renovated; was that a one-time effort?
Or do you belong to a group that does volunteer work like that often.
Nice job by the way.

Rick- i don't think knife making will take over i don't have the proper equipment, and my Santa is not about to buy me a belt grinder.iwas given some blades from some old broken pocket knives, and i had to make something with them. But is is a lot of hand work.the one with antler handle i gave to the gentleman who gave me the blades,he has some old straight razors which he may part with.if he does i will contact you and maybe i can get on your waiting list.
The farmhouse was a one time thing for Hospice Newmarket, and it got started because i have a truck and they wanted some materials transported, and my involvement just grew from that point on.my sister in law was project mgr. for the renovations and i guess they needed someone who was more of a finish carpenter.i have considered joining Habitat for Humanity, but in are area there are not many projects.
