I agree with Smee on preferring less material near the blade.

I do like extra weight on my tools and have added lead to handles. I have found that it is critical that the weight be at the blade end to feel right. Pic below is an experiment that has a very nice feel to it. The lead is visible where the shaft enters the handle.

I drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the handle, then a small hole inside of that to hold and stabilize the shaft, melt lead in an old spoon with a propane torch, and pour into the large hole.

I sand both the lead and the handle to a taper. As I said it gives the tool a nice balance, but has proven to be more trouble than it was worth.
