Smile Re: New Knife

Vic .. I almost missed your knife ... You slipped it in without me seeing on the post ..
Vic .. That is a very nice knife .. The blade is thin and looks like it could hold it's edge for quite sometime ..
Nice looking handle and looks comfortable to the hand ..
Great job Vic ..

its difficult to answer this without getting into forging hot steel and tempering it, and that would take chapters..

i heard drill rod stock is good material and i found the supplier enco stocks it.. LINK

i been wondering about the replacement blades for portable planers, if they are as tuff as the larger plainer blades they ought to make a real hard blade , but being to hard it might be prone to breaking or chipping.. i made some hunting knives mounted in Alaskan moose horn out of the big blades and they stay sharp season to season..

i keep one ear to the ground, but i dont travel metalworker circles as much i did before i retired.. and they make discoveries in the manufacture of steel and treatments every day

there is some forms you might pick up some info from vic
but i dont have my old address handy. good luck on the hunt!

Isn't drill rod stock case hardened? I would question working with it for making cutting tools. But I'm far from being an expert.

I dont know Bob_in_TN if thats true or not.

enco has it listed as in 3 columns, W1-water, O1-oil and A2-air hardening, then continues in depth of the material makeup,

but i dont think they would have missed listing such as only case hardening on the technical data sheet.

one remark says can be used as is on many applications without tempering. who knows for sure.

i believe it comes dead soft aneled.

found something here about the case hardening effect with all but air hardening steel

Too thin or shape your blades its faster to use a wet grinder (if trying to save temper) harbor freight has an 8" one which I use all summer long and Lowe's and Sears has a small 5" version that I use while traveling in the winter...
Drill rod is very high quality tool steel which I have used lots of in making wood carving tools.. First I flatten it then shape it into the tool and do the complete heat treating process..
For making tools I use circular saw blades, drill rod, cement nails, used power sawmill blade material ETC. The material being used should be close in thickness for the tool desired this equals less work grinding ETC..
