Default New Knife

Hi Everyone
I made this knife today The blade is a Sawzall blade you can buy the blades in different thickness. This blade was one of the thin Milwalke blades. I wanted to make me a knife to do flat plan carving with it came out very sharp and it cuts the basswood nice you can make long cut with it.The only thing is i would not try to cut hardwoods with it the blade is 1 3/4"long I left it with a little extra back where it is a thin blade. The handle is made out of a piece of Sasfrass.I hope you enjoy the photos.
Vic.

Vic,
looks like a nice knife, as to blade shape & bevel...

might i suggest to try the flexcut shape, on the next handle, its bigger and fills your hand better than the cigar shaped handles, which I find it keeps your hand from tiring..

just saw out 2 slabs hollow them out for the blade tang to fit inside of and set it all togather with 5 minuet epoxy clamped. you can shape the handle later.
---
this is the first knife i made out of a saber saw milwalkee metal cutting blade. its real ugly, but the long tapered toothpick shape blade is tough and i can really put the power to it...
near 2" long its pretty stout, a brass tubing was added to make the ferrel, making it safer but the tang continues halfway through the handle the full leingth of the sawblade was used.. and its more comfortable than it looks.

i found the milwalkee blade really too hard for carving knife and did worry about it breaking, so i retempered it to relieve the stress, its got a little flex but no way is it flimsy.. as you can see i didnt grind the bevel all the way to the to the back edge of the knife adding more backbone...

Looks like a nice carving tool. I like the way you let the hip of the blade flow into the handle at the bolster. Too many knife makers have a large bolster that bumps the carving as you work. I have some of those types and I sanded off that part to get to what you have. That way I can utilize the whole blade not just the front part of it.

Thats a very nice looking knife you made.I'm real pleased with the knife that i put up the photos of so far it has a good even sharpness from one end to the other i wish i had a belt sander to cut the bevel in the blade with. It takes all day to set the angle with a file and several grades of emery cloth glued to a straight board. I have to say working it down by hand usely make for a very nice edge less chance of making a mistake that away.I apericate all the help that you can give do you know of a better metal to make the blades ouit of ?
Vic.
