That scary sharp method is something... for sure..
I don't sharpen the wife's knives as sharp as my carving tools.
Now i use to but she doesnt protect the cutting edges when she cuts, and dulls them out very fast. by cutting meat in a china plate and things like that. so i don't waste my time unless I'm cooking,
Several times i have sharpened all the knives on the place without telling her,. there was definitely hell to pay after she had cut herself at several times peeling the potatoes ...
needless to say i have been put out of business and run out of the kitchen...
last year she received a pull through knife sharpener for the kitchen and she tends to the sharpening in there.
Marci, once you have a reputation for sharpening knives its hard to shake it.
So folks know when they pick up a knife in your house they know it means business.
you will get shoe boxes of knives to sharpen on occasion.. I have...
MY BEST ADVISE ON SHARPENING FOR OTHERS... you will never get done with the job If you do it for free! everybody wants their knives sharp Especially if its free..
so to keep some time for yourself charge a little.
as you work through a pile of knives you will find in the normal household not all knives sharpen the same. they wont sharpen as sharp or hold a edge the same. some due to the blends of steel and minerals others because of the way (angles) the blade is ground.
good luck with your endeavors and hope your wrist heals up soon and you can get back to carving. yer wasting time gal.. you could be carving them beautiful things your thinking about in your dreams......
Thomas

| | Re: I need another Knife Marci: Take a look at this one (top one). I bought mine at Woodcraft. Works great for detail carving, but it's difficult to hone, as the blade flexes a bit. I got around this by taking a piece of scrap basswood and putting compound on it to use as a hone. http://www.woodcraft.com/images/family/web1336big.jpg

| | Re: I need another Knife Marci, why have "One favorite knife in the kitchen? Why not make them all your sharpest favorite knives.
I have to sharpen by little brides kitchenknives ever so often as she has some that you never have to sharpen, yeah right. We use to have mush tomatoes in the summer instead of sliced tomatos. Bought her a complete set of Chicago cutlery and added several mor eparing knives to it and now, it is slice tomatos. Whahoo! Hoever, when the daughter and daughter in law come over and help in the kitchen, she does tell them, those are as sharp as his carving knives, pointing to me.
Now to get your to quit using them for screw drivers, Geez!
Ya need about 20 more carving knives. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
