Mr. Doughty uses a box cutter he calls Old reliable. I like uses a box cutter blade but the handle didn't fit my hand. Having small hands I tried something that works very well for me and want to share it with everyone that might be interested. I take a blade cutting part, put it in a vise real tight. . Using my vise grips I pop off the top half. That way it will fit into an X-Acto handle. Here are picture of what I'm trying to tell ya. Word of caution, please be careful. GinnytooU |

I've made a few versions of Old Reliable. You might want to try the X-Acto lightweight utility blade, X208. It should fit in the handle and it's safer than breaking a blade. Here's what I did with it. Perfect companion for Old Reliable This blade is thinner and works best as a detail knife.

Ginny, I think Xacto sells a carving blade similar to what you made. I think breaking the blade in the manner you describe may be dangerous. Do you have a Dremel with a cutoff disk that you could use. I think that may be safer and give you a straighter edge.

OLFA makes several varieties of break-away blades which could very well be the width that you have created.

Very creative but very dangerous! I hope you also wear safety goggles!

Why not buy blades of the correct width? I can. OLFA. Home Hardware. I use them up by the dozens, stone carving. |

I fine the razer blades that I use keep a sharp edge longer than the X-acto blades and don't break as easy either..So for I haven't found blades that fit into the handle that I use. Breaking the blades in half isn't that hard. Cutting edge in vise and I clamp two metal flat pieces over the exposed part .Then using my vise grips just pop off the top. the parts that break off are contained with in the metal strips. Just my version of old reliable. Thanks everyone. GinnytooU |

Sounds good to me. Secured so if they do fracture they are contained. We all do things that work. Sounds like you found a way to do it safe, now you can continue to carve. Have fun & Carve On, Kadiddle |
