| I just wanted to share this about some new carving tools I just received today. I’ve just recently gotten interested again in carving specifically hand tools only. I tried this once before but quickly reverted back to power or a combination of the two. What I have now found was that the first few tools I purchased, what I thought was sharp, were not all that sharp and frustration set in. Well I learned how to sharpen them on a Tormek (thanks to this forum) and decided to purchase a few more sizes (based on what I’ve read online and in books) I figured I would stay with the Lamp Brand tools as before as they seemed to be a bit less (trying to save a buck) but I noticed Woodcraft put the Pfeil Swiss made tools on sale (30-38% off / tool) so how could I pass that up. Anyway they just got here and WOW they are sharp and square with straight edges right out of the box ALL 23 of them. Now I’m not knocking the Lamp brand but I will say I did have to square and straighten the edge on several and all (12) needed sharpening. Does anyone else use Lamp tools? Well I’ve got an 18x8x4 block of basswood and am ready to dig in.Hammer Hopefully I will have some WIP pics and better luck this time and stay away from the power. |

Red Face wasn't sure what I needed so I got what seemed to be the most commonly used or cut specific. Baby |

I use Pfeil tools as well and am very pleased with them...and you say you just receive how many???? Wow! Pfeil are a little more expensive than most brands but I haven't heard of anyone complain about the quality. Patrick |

I have both, although the majority are Pfeil. I prefer the Pfeil, for me they seem easier to sharpen and cut smooth. This may be due in part to the angle, the Pfeil are 20 degrees and the lamp are 25 degrees. Chuck

I "hemmed and hawwed" over the chisel selections too. Ken has a set of the "Swissies" which I have borrowed, and I liked them a lot. After watching this thread for a bit, I pulled the trigger on my own set last night. Now I join the "Swiss-made" army! Does that conflict with my pocket "rooster carving" knife?

Hello, I have a few of the Pfeil palm tools, and I like them very much. The tools are razor sharp, and hold an edge very well. bygeorge mentioned that the bevel is 20 degrees, instead of Lamp's 25 degrees. This can be an advantage if you only use the tools to carve Basswood, White Pine or even Butternut. The problem is if you want to carve Walnut, Poplar or other harder woods using a mallet, you will have to re-grind those Pfeil tools to a steeper bevel. Otherwise, the edge can chip or break. That is why I recomend the Stubai tools. Top quality tools at very reasonable prices. I read a book long ago that suggested an assortment of tools that included 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" of the 3, 5, 7 and 9 sweep gouges, and a 1/4" and 1/2" 60 degree v-tool. Add a chisel and skew, and it has worked very well for me as a starter set. Happy Carving, Dan Heine |
