Default moving up to lifesize or close?

I’ve been carving for ten years now in the middle of Wyoming, mostly small stuff, working with palm tools Flexcut to begin with then I bought a Stubia caricature set a year and a half ago.

I was recently approached to do some bigger carvings, ½ to ¾ life size stuff and trying to figure out Mallet tools and sizes. I’m thinking rough out with a chain saw then go to work with a mallet? Finish with my palms? I need suggestions for tools, good but $ can be a factor.

Any and all thoughts are welcome

Mike

mike,

there is a wide range of tools for this stubai makes good tools in full size and euro or intermediate sizes, swiss also makes the same sized tools, the only differences is that the full size tools ar longer and maybe a bigger handle, also the full size tools may be the only ones you can get bigger sized sweeps in, just have to get a catalog and compare,as far as price it may not be that much different so if it was me i would probably go with the full size tools, and if i was going to pick one brand it would have to be the swiss tools stubais are good but sometimes a little harder to sharpen than swiss and the swiss will come sharp right out the pouch, as far as sizes not sure there maybe somone else can help you there.

hope this helps

bart

I have Stubai and Ashley Iles.....I really prefer the Ashley Iles, can't tell you exactly why, both are great tools!

Thanks Guys I've been looking at the Swiss tools and now I'll look at the Ashley Iles.
