I'm asking cuz I don't recall ever seeing any sharpening jig on Denny Neubauer's web site or advertised anywhere. .

I'm not a wood carver, but thought I could contribute to this thread.
An alternative to the Ultimate Sharpener, that you might consider is the belt sander from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=2485
I have used both the Ult. Sharpener and HF sander, and both work great. For home sharpening, you would get a lot of use out of the HF sander. You can get the sander and a supply of belts, including leather for under $50-$60. Belts can be obtained from SuperGrit or Lee Valley Tool, and I got a leather belt from Woodworker supply. Also Lee Valley sells the Ult. Sharpener, but without a motor, so that's something to look at too.
Although I haven't used a Burke Sharpening System, I have used various wheels, etc. so in principal this might be the way to go, especially if you have a variety of tools. Just thought you might like to know about the HF sander... it wouldn't be too expensive to have it to supplement your sharpening equipment.
Hope this helps.

Yes it is Denny Nuebauer and this is something new he has developed. It is really awsome for holding angles of tools while you sharpen them. |

That is much too coarse and too fast, it will burn a piece of good steel in a flash....need something slower. |

| | Re: More Power Sharpeners ??? It wasn't that long ago I would have said the same thing. Actually, it took me a while to learn, but it's not the speed of the grinder that burns the steel (although you do have to consider it), but rather the amount of pressure. Once I learened that, I found I could sharpen a knife, and never get it more than warm to the touch. Even the Ult. Sharpener can quickly burn an edge if not used properly.
I'm confident that it can be used with good results.
I do agree though, until you practice with it a bit, don't grab your finest tool and start sharpening.
As for too coarse? there's a variety of belts available.
Oh, and one more thing, if you get a leather belt, don't leave it on the grinder, it will stretch it out and becomes unusable.

| | Re: More Power Sharpeners ??? I've been using a Delta 1" x 30 for years (at least 15) to do my sharpening and as was said, pressure is the key. It is fast and effective. A 400 grit belt give you about a factory edge, then I move to my washita and arkansas stones. Then the strop.
One other thing that leads to heat build up is an old worn belt. |

Which belt rotation is best for carving tools : clockwise or counterclockwise ?
