Smile Mill Knife

I bought a Sign Carving book recently and the author suggested using a Mill Knife for carving letters and many other carving duties....does anyone here use a Mill Knife and if so, how do you like for lettering compared to gouges and straight chisels? Thanks for any opinions shared.

I think I bought the same book as I thought I needed the mill knife so I bought it. You can do the same thing with some large carving tools. Somewhere on here Rick reccomended a V-gouge about size 10-12mm or thereabouts( I can't remember the exact dimensions but I know it works better than the mill knife. Hope this helps and you might want to contact Rick at little shavers.com for the exact size of that gouge.

I got a custom made lettering knife for $80 used it once and hated it. I use a standard carving knife and a straight chisel. That combo seems to work the best for me.

Actualy my Bother in Law made that for me for chirstmas last year. It is a replica Gerstner box. He also does all my pattern work for me with his computers and plotters he can printpout large eagle patterns. His shop is a collection of the finest power tools money can buy. You will not see Craftsman or Jet tools in his shop. Only the finest German and swiss made tools. I get so depressed everytime I go over there.
