Default Micromotor Carvers

Good day,

I carve miniature bas relief and in the round sculptures for wooden ship models using a belt driven dental drill with 3/32" burs. I am considering buying a Micromotor type tool with motorized handpiece and have looked at:

Buffalo Dental Products
Ram Products
NSK Products
Foredom Products

and some others.

I was wondering if any of you could give me the benefit of your experience with these tools and if you have any recommendations?

Regards,
Bill

I have seen many micromotors and have yet to see one I didn't like. Obviously, some are better than others and priced accordingly. But they are all good little machines. You might also check out the Optima 2 which sells in the $300 price range. A good machine for the money. I have one and like it. If you want to go absolutely first class google up the Brasseler. It is pricey but a real workhorse. I have one of those too. The ones you mentioned are good too. You can't really go wrong.

I purchased the Microcarver Pro from Wood Carvers Supply a while back. It has done a lot of work for me and never missed a beat. I REALLY like their customer service also. Good tool, good people. Also at the $300 mark.

I have a Ram 4500 that I really enjoy. Like a lot of my tools it is used hard, I have had it about 10 years and twice needed repairs with teh customer service being great. I also have a Wecheer micromotor that performs well but not to the level of the Ram. On the other hand it was also a lot less expensive.

Have fun carve

Harold

Hi Bill. I use a Foredom 1050 Micro for my detail work and it is the answer for me! It has taken my detail work on to a whole new level. I'm very satisfyed with it. I find it perfect for the difficult head scroll work or the fine carved work around a stern. To me ..... it works lite a magic pencil ....... just imagine what you want it to do and it seems to do it!
