I have one of those demagnetizers.....that doesn't work either...use one of those on a blade and put next to a sheet of sandpaper you have been sharpening knives on.....it will still pick of the steel dust.

Hey, Bob.

I got my kitchen ones at the local general store, next time I go there I'll look for a brand.

My shop ones are kinda big ugly no-name clunkers, garage sale, 1 dollar each.

"I'm a big, bad, swarf-suckin' son of a gun..."

Dave, I guess they might magnetize the tools slightly, but not enough to cause me a problem. I just wipe them off and carry on. I've never seen any evidence of dulling. IMHO, the convenience of the magnetic rack is what I'm after.

Friction fit holders are neat, but have to be carefully designed or else they cover up the part of the tool that shows you what tool it is. OTOH, they're tool-specific, so I guess you put the same tool in the same place every time and get used to it. I just like the ability to put the tool anywhere on the rack I want.

No problem identifying, I shape the covers to match the blade and do designs on them, some faces, some chipcarving, whatever comes to mind, I know what the knife is by whats on the cover, and shape.

When I made mine, I was in a hurry and not that creative.

At least I lived to regret it.

The demagnetizers work very well. I have used them in machine shops for years I also have my own at home shop. Did you ever thing that the steel dust gets static and magnetizes itself. The tool does not need to have a magnetic charge for metal to cling. I long gave up maching for a living and have been an archicet and general contractor for the past 30 years. I use magnetic strips in my shop and never have a problems. The answer too the magnetizing dulling the tool is, not unless a little ferry drops it on the floor and hangs it back up. It does not change the hardness of the tool. Harbour Freight has a cheap demagnetizer that works well for a cheap price. No I am not a HF fan but once in a while.......
