Hello, I was just wondering if anyone on this board has purchased the Koch Sharpening System? If so, what are your thoughts about it. Roger Schroeder did an article about it in the latest WCI as most of you know, but just was wondering if anyone else has it and what they think about it too. It is a very expensive machine, but I am wondering if it may just be the answer for the long haul. I've been carving about 2 1/2 years now and, God willing, I plan on carving for as long as I am able to (it's my hobby now). I've just been stropping since I've started but I am getting to the point where I believe I need to buy some stones. I'm afraid I could eventually have a small investment in stones before I find what works best for me and maybe this system could be the answer. They say it will not burn your tools. Comments please. Have a good day. Chipper67

I know nothing about the Koch system. I just wanted to say that I got the Ultimate Sharpening Machine from chippingaway.com less than a week ago. I am super impressed. My tools have never been so sharp (not counting the ones I bought from Rick). I could not be happier. I have always had a hard time getting my Flexcut gouges and knife really sharp. No problem any more. Just the stropping belt alone is worth the price. The Trizact belts that come with it are a real gem. Check it out also. Really can't beat the service from ChippingAway either. Fine establishment. |

I took a class with Nora Hall a few years ago and bought one of the Koch wheels and the paste. I must say that it is a pretty effective system - however, you have to be careful to keep your bevel flat (I often use the side of the wheel) to avoid rounding over your edge. That said - I still use my ceramic stones (med/ultra fine) and a good strop more than I do the Koch. Also have a set of the ceramic slips - great for inside bevels! In my opinion, ceramic is the way to go - last forever and no mess with oils... |
