| | Re: Knives - need recommendations I've used mainly pocket knives over the years, and have used X-actos quite a bit. I recently got a Flexcut that seems to be excellent.
The main knife I'm using is a modified Victorinox Gardener. I cut the blade back and reshaped it into a wharncliffe style with a 1 5/8" cutting edge.
Learning how to sharpen should be one of your top priorities. |

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations Gee....not one mention yet of Old Reliable! No matter how hard I try to show you the way to true happeniness in carving ............ My recommendation??? Buy as many as you can and then, when you set down to start carving pick the sharpest. Then remember the old proverb..."It's not the tool but the hand behind it!" |

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations I just received my Kershaw from Rick a couple of hours ago. I had him do the modifications to the knife and sharpen it for me. Thanks Rick!! It is great to have a decent pocketknife for carving. Now I will have something to do when my wife drags me out shopping or to the casino!

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations I am amazed that nobody has mentioned Cape Forge Knives!!!! I have 5 of them and they are absolutely top notch. These are all hand forged, heat treated and polished. They come with a bandaid to remind you they come razor sharp. Go to www.capeforge.com. They are a regular advertiser in Woodcarving Illustrated, too.

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations Without a doubt, check with Rick or Theresa at "Little Shavers". Great people and great selection of knives.
While I do not have a wide selection of knives to recommend; I agree with Capt. B that Cape Forge is hard to beat. They come sharp, stay sharp and the funky handle really works for me.
I find it ironic that a guy with bandaid in his name recommends this knife; because when I got mine last Christmas, I got bit twice in the first 15 minute test drive. Never felt it, just started leaking blood.
The moral of the story is to buy a carving glove also.

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations I have already commented on this thread, but, with the variety of comments on which knife is best, There isn't One knife bertter than the rest but many that compares to others. But the best one I have seen is my Grandpa's Old Timer. Been around longer than most of us here on the board and still a very sharp knife. |

| | Re: Knives - need recommendations Kenny,
Can you give this youngster a clue as to which Old Timer you're referring to? Seems to be a bunch of them out there, and I haven't a clue as to what one is what! Thanks! |
