Default Knives

I remember seeing a post about making carving knives out of old pocket knives. Here are some I made this past week. The blades are from old Kabar and Scharde jack knives. The blades still have a few blemishes and grinding marks but did sharpen up real nice. The handles are walnut from the scrap bin. I plan on making a few for friends in the near future. Everything was done by hand including reshaping the blades and finishing the handles. Learned a lesson though, finish the handles BEFORE you sharpen the blades (ouch)--several times.

have fun, carve

Harold

Hey Harold,

very nice job on the knives. And, I like both the shape and finish of the handles, too.

You've put a lot of work into them and I know your frinds who are lucky enough to get one will be thrilled.

I've made most of my knives and I know the time and effort it takes.

Harold,

Nice work, thanks for posting the photos.

A very old friend made me two very similar carving knives from some antique pocket knife blades, they are very good steel. I enjoy the continued use of a blade from an antique slipjoint with broken main blade that would have been discarded.

Regards,
FK

Thanks Guys I have a few more old pocket knives and now have the little woman looking around at garage sales for them. I did try to make one out of a cheap Japanese knife and it didn't work at all, wouldn't stay sharp or take a good finish. The next step is to maybe make some out of good knife steel, not sure what kind is best so will need some advice on this. Have been cruising around the web site at Rick's Little Shavers place and found a few tips. I may be just prejudiced but "my" knives sure seem to get more use than the "store bought" ones, LOL.

have fun carve

Harold
