Manteo, I have two knives that are shaped like you described, made by Lyons. The one is sharp on the outside and the other is sharp on the inside. They have their use, but not too often. Would I replace them if something happened to them, probably not, and I'm a big fan of Lyon's knives.

I just went back and reread Rick's post, guess the reason I don't use them often is, I don't carve horses. :>)

I have the flexcut pelican that is the outside curve, its handy for some things....as for horses...I like horses...and as was said earlier, I could never eat a whole one tho!

i have several,

some excel like exacto but stiffer and a couple warren blades set in perminate socketed handles filled with epoxy
..
they are very good for (like rick mentioned) tight confined spaces like arm pits, between thumb and hand crotches or horse-animal belly's ,
doing them stop cuts in tight places or for just digging out them stubborn chips that dont want to let go some of the knife blades are sharpened on the concave side, some are sharpened on the convex,

one is just wore down to a nub but it still has uses,
Yes i would replace them if lost or broken but not with expensive replacements as i really abuse them, by flexing or bending them, in twisting cuts, the thin flexibility is the attribute i depend on when doing in between feet, carving arch lines on boots etc. where a expensive hard steel well made knife would probably break...

before I started buying all my stuff from .."rick"... I bought one of those knives from cape forrge .very good knife for making stop cuts it does not slip . you have great control over the knife

Animal carvers use a blade of that shape to get into tight places around the inside of the legs.

Some of those "scimitar" shaped blades are sharp on both the concave and convex edges......real handy, but real dangerous,as we tend to push the backside of our blades with our thumb. One of my knives like this I ground the concave side flat so I could push safely. The other knife I wanted both sides sharp so I painted the handle BLOOD RED, to remind myself that the backside is sharp, no matter which side of the blade I am using.

i would say shame on you al, we all know better than forcing the cut, but we justify it some how, my wife was marvling one day of how small and consistant small sized chips i have been making,
i told her it comes from years of cuts and experiance of judging how much skin i was willing to risk,
she said thats nice could you keep them out of my drawers.....

apperently they make an escapt through the washing machine drain pipe but took the wrong detour... i got slapped!!! whack"

Thomp, when you say chips in her "drawers" do you mean, like chest of drawers? Or "drawers" as in "skivies"? Could make a difference, a big difference..Tom H
