| | Knife Use I often see knifes advertised by the various makers with a quarter moon shaped blade, with the edge on the inside of the curve. I am wondering in what situation these type of blades would be used for? Thanks. |

| | Re: Knife Use I agree with Hi Ho, sounds like a chip carving knife.
However, there are some who do regular in the round carving with them also. I happen to not be one. |

| | Re: Knife Use One of the knives I purchased from cape forge was a blade just like you are speaking of. It is an absoulte dream for working on a round staff following the curve of the staff. It places the contol edge into your hand so you can apply pressure to the wood instead of to the blade.
In manufacturing secondary operations most of the time you move the work to the machine. Like sanding, you move the piece to the belt. In doing so you have more control over the process. If you consider this knife in the same concept , you move the piece to the cutter, that additional control , give less chance of slipping and allows you to spiral down a staff in a very controlled manner.
I have also used it to trim around neck lines as the curve blade will follow the contour of a neck quite well . |

| | Re: Knife Use I have one that I will sometimes use to carve the corner wedges out of eyes with.... the point of the knife does well in this function and with the curve, it's relatively easy to see what I'm trying to pop out.
It's not my favorite for doing this though. I now have a small straight blade that is set at an angle for this purpose and is more versatile. |

Most that I sell are used for carving confined contours such as the belly of a horse. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
