| | knife making I've been busy for two weeks now making a razor knife. With Rick's, the knife maker among other things, info and a little patience I'll make it yet. I just put the epoxy in the finished handle an hour ago.
Learned a lot. It's the little things that get you and by the time you realize the mistake it is too late. For instance drilling the knife hole must be true and if you did it right you must then carve the handle to match the "true" position of the blade. I'm making a matching blade cover with a magnet inside to retain the knife. Learned alot about this also and I've priviously made three others. All kinds of learning expirences, added decorative eyes on one side should match the other side(sounds easy-it isn't), don't remove too much wood or the magnet will show thru, cutting the blade slot on one side of the inside cover so when the magnet picks up the blade it won't rotate the knife and therefore mismatch the cover. All kind of things you never think of.
Most of all thou, I enjoyed ever flaming minute of it. |

| | Re: knife making I did, won't help much...the magnetism does seem to wear off after awhile if left without the magnet.....I notice too that the magnetism doesn't occur as much if the knife is used a lot, these were in the sheaths for quite awhile and not used. I took the magnets out and cut some thin strips of wood and kept trimming and trying until I got a good fit and replaced the magnets with very thin wood strips, works fine. |

| | Re: knife making I've bought and sold for several years. When I pay $50 for something and 6 months later sell it for $20 just to get rid of it, I figure I got $30 of good education, I should be a smarter buyer next time! Money well spent, as education is never cheap!
