Default What kind of dust masks do you use?

Hey everyone,
What sort of dust masks do you use when power carving... especially the more toxic exotic hardwoods?

I use two kinds, Bob. First, for most "regular carving" I use one of the cheap paper filter type (throw away) and keep a supply of these in my carving box. If I'm getting serious about the dust I have a carbon filter respirator thar filters out the dust and any aromatic residues. I actually like that one better because it doesn't fog up my glasses with exhaled breath.

I've seen some of those respirator packs that have a full face shields and the cannister packed behind the neck with two hoses running to it.......looks like a scuba outfit! I think these are more for woodturners or really dedicated power carvers. a bit more than I care to carry around!

I use the respirator type, rubber mask with twin filters. The fit is much better with the adjustable straps and the filters much more efficient. Paper disposable ones don't give a good fit, nor do they filter out sufficient particles.

Hi Bob,
For power carving, even when I use a dustbox/catcher, I use a paper 3M mask for dust/particles/fumes. It's thicker than the all-purpose masks and has an intake/outflow valve that facilitates a better fit and filtering. If I don't have the dustbox on or am powercarving some wood that is considered toxic, I use a regular ventilator mask with a built-in filter---again 3M brand. I do that partly because when I started buying them, my husband worked for 3M and I could buy them cheaper at the "company" store. When he retired, I tried buying other cheaper brands, but I didn't feel like they filtered as well. So I'm back to just 3M brand. THey have so many masks for so many different needs.

Thumbs up Re: What kind of dust masks do you use?

Hey Bob, I purchased on of the Dust-be Gone mask. Its like a surgeons mask with some kind of membrane for a filter. ITS EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, has elastic adjustable top strap and a velcro bottom on. Has wire in top that bends to contour to your nose. NO FOGGING UP. and its not in your vision area. I have bad sinus problems and basswood is hard on me, since i got mask, its 95% better. Its washable. Cost about 35 bucks but worth every penny. Its in most of the wood carving catalogs. I'll give it 5 stars.

I just work outside and let the Texas wind blow it in the neighbors yard. Besides, I've already had cancer, so I'm immune.
