I have a couple of flex-cuts bench knives and they are not on my favorites list. The blades and their sharpeness are great ... it's the handle. The grip is much to wide (fat) for my hand so I always feel uncomfortable when I do use them.

Perhaps it's my own perseptive but many of the tool handles over the years have been designs by men to be used by men ... My beloved hubbies hand is over one inch longer then mine even though he is only three inches taller then I am. So where the flex-cut bench knife would easily and comfortably fit him , it sure wasn't made for me! I avoid a lot of palm tools for the exact same reason.

I am going to make a definitive statement here so watch out! I don't care how great or fantastic the steel is, how perfect the blade shape, or how pristine the edge; if the grip doesn't fit YOUR hand the tool is useless!

Susan

I have the entire line of Flex-cut tools and I have always made adjustments to the handles on the knives. My hands are small and I've found that with a little "tweeking" of the Flex-cut knives, you can make them fit just fine. Just take one of your other knives and trim the handles down a bit and sand them accordingly. I always carve away the big "nubs" close to the blade to allow you easier access and also carve away "slim down" the side portions. I think if you do this it will help alot and make them quite a bit more comforable. Hope this helps!

I am with Susan on this one I have never liked how Flexcut knifes feel in my hand the only one I really like is the small pelican other than that I dont like them. In fact I am selling all of my Flexcut knifes because I never use them. They were the first knifes I purchased and I thought they were good, now I have a few of Ricks knifes and for the extra few dollars I have ten times the knife. Unfortunatly Rick is not making any more knifes for a while maybe its a good job because I would probably buy every one he makes.Good knifes are like good women once you find a good one you had better hold on to it.

Right on, Susan! I have the same problem with many tools, especially knives. Still my all time favorite are the old bench knives. They say Solingen on the handle, and at one time I had 3. (Right now I only see 2! I like to have 3 really sharp when I start carving, then I am all set for a little while.)
Same with palm tools, unless I can snug up on the handle, many are useless to me.

denny neabauer has a new knife in his arsenal of tools just for small hands for the ladies and younger folks whos hands are not as big as some of the men folk.

i have pretty good sized hands so i like a fat handle and a long blade{13/4-3 1/4} blade. the man that makes my knives he will make smaller handles also.

Bette,

When I began whittling my sister gave me a Solingen bench knife and Whittling and Woodcarving by Tangerman. Even now when I have made a few knives for myself that work fine and hold a good edge the Solingen is still the first one I reach for.

I'm thinking about ordering another one from Old Texas Woodcarvers Shop just so I can carve longer between stropping.
