Default just carving (re;poor mans vise )

Bob, I want to thank you for posting the link to the poor mans vise in the thread below.

I went out to the garage and scavenged almost all the parts for free. Then a trip to home depot (it seems they never have what I need when I go there.)
and a trip to Lowe's with a total of $10.88 not bad .

I'm very pleased with it so far it looks like it will work fine.

now to plop a chunk of wood on it and test it out. It should be a treat because I've been getting by with just a regular bench vise.

I think I can make some simple modifications and it might be just the thing to hold sticks.

Thanks again

Some of us that made the poor mans vise, made a few modifications to it....one I can remember is notching the "T" fitting where the bolt goes through to tighten...it keeps it from slipping....been a long time, can't seem to remember the other modifications? Maybe Al does.

I don't have the photos any more, Dave, but I ground half round detents in the "T" fitting where the eye bolt fits against it. I ground those at the very top, 45 degrees, 90 degrees, etc, all the way around. That lets the eye bolt lock into position instead of slipping around the circumference of the "T".

I also brazed the eye bolt closed, as it had a tendency to open up when tightened.

I'll dig out that vice later today and see if I made any more mods to it, but I think that's it.

Al

Michael

You're welcome but I can't take the credit for it--I just have a knack for finding things on the Internet--or at least remembering where they are with favorites.

Hope it works for you and you get many years of carving with it.

Merry Christmas!

Bob L
