oh ya and idea popped into my head as soon as you said you wanted to carve him something....heee hheee

A big tooth.. with a 'critter' inside waving out. Ya know.. a cavity making critter... thats proud to have made residence in that tooth.

Or he can be hanging on the outside with a hammer and chisle trying to chip his way IN to the tooth....

My dentist gave me a zip lock bag full of "used bits." I found that he gets rid of those things long before they are showing any wear. As he said, "I can't take a chance with a bit wearing out." I have not asked for any more as I did not like using them. They are too short. I guess if I was using up the bits at a fast rate, I would reconsider; but, prefer to purchase the longer shank bits.

Marci,
i was thinking of a bearded gnome mining a gold molar tooth, maybe hauling out tailing's with wheel barrow, or a whole troop/company working it over with pickaxes.

hes got lots of mall junk hanging from the ceilings in corners of his exam rooms flying pigs and such.. little cajun flavor of humour....

Paul,
the short shanks are something to deal with, and most the bits are 1/8 long cutting end fine planing blades that clog fast in fruit woods for sure, i tested on peach, but dry peach pits ought to be right down the right alley for these bits.
it will take some experimenting what can be done and what to avoid with these bits

any suggestions from experience would be appreciated...
thanks for the replies
Thomas

I can’t remember where I saw this caricature carving but it was a patient in the chair and the dentist was extracting a tooth. The funny part was the dentist was either up on the arms of the chair or had a knee up on it for leverage and was using a rather large pair of pliers. The patient was pushing back in the chair in concern or rather fear.

I’ve been out of the carving loop for some time so I can’t recall his name (I think I recently read that this carver was carver of the year) He his a caricature carver, carves out of solid pieces maybe it was one of his pieces.

Anyway I always thought that carving would be hysterical in a dentist office or better yet in an exam room.

you may be thinking of Lynn Droughtys dentest carvungs, he has one bout the same as mentioned, pretty rough and maybe gruesom to a kid getting use to what goes on in the back of the office, but in good taste, and craved superbly...

i don't know if hes man of the year? wouldnt be supprized though...

Thomas, You're the MOST __________, fill in the blank. Ha, This has been a good thread for me, learned something, you guys talking about how small those burrs are, I thought they had 1/4" shanks no doubt, the way they vibrated my tooth and head. Bunch of us guys have already had many a laugh today, story in our newspaper says, man puts firecracker in the south end of him facin north, and lets his friends take pictures of this with their cell phone. Well, I ain't coming to your place for teeth repair, and I ain't playing with matches nor firecrackers. More ideas for woodcarvings coming in my head all the time. Earl

Sounds like a the man starving because having 10 children he couldn't afford another, doc said you need a vasectomy, feller said cant afford it,
doc said put a fire cracker in a old bean can, lite it and he count to 10 ,
the man, not being able count on both hands holding the can, he puts the can between his legs as he counts reaches 5 then on the other hand, continues 6,7,8,BOOM...
fin....

these bits burs and such, are different sized, All 1/8th" or less, i got 7 different bits stuck to a 3/8" earth magnet side by side so that should tell you how small.. 3 with ball burs carbide, or no, 4 are balls. one is too small for me to see, but that sucker stuck me,... the other 3 are longer clyndndric shaped bits like for smoothing.. all 7 totaled slightly under 1/2" wide side by side and the longest one is under 3/4" i can hide all 7 with my thumb tip..
like playing with the smaller numbered drill bits, use them once and loose them getting them back to the rack...

ok back to my pete leclure carving caracature heads & faces, book.. i got a project going, nearing rough out...
