The Sears sharpener is great for shaping blades without burning them. After that I go to bench stones or DMT Diamond stones.
For some examples go to http://www.picturetrail.com/millhoused

Hi millhoused...what method do you use to cut the large saw blades down to a manageable size prior to shaping? I've got a couple of blades here that I was going to fool around with but don't know quite where to start.

I mark them with a sharpie marker and then use a dremel or foredom flex shaft tool with a cutoff wheel. I cut for a couple of seconds and then quench the blade in water. You can see the water evaporate as the blade heats up. Quench it before it gets too hot and the temper will remain.
I leave a little scrap to grind off while making the bevel.
I will post some pictures when I make the next one.
It looks like I am going to make a set of chip carving knives.

Makin' firewood,
Don

Dons knives are very nice. He posted the url for another group/list and after seeing them I spent an hour reshaping, sanding, and staining the handle on the detail knife I made in September.
