The rock positioner looks like the panavise 400. I have one of those and I'm probably going to get something different. Its difficult to get really tight and the shaft will still rotate if you need to put your weight behind your large gouges.

what ya trying to carve or how heavy you talking ? might have a ideal .Ive got 2 things that might work .I use these in my carving shop for holding work in the round. I get good control , safety and conveniece with these also you might be talking about the Spencer Franklin Hydraclamp?or the Stretton carvers clamp with integral spanner for adjustment? I like the two wood holding vices I have .you mount these to your bench and you hold your work with a woodcarvers screw. you also can trun the work 360* one draw back is the hole in the base of the carving I always allow a little extra waste wood on the base for this or conceal it with a plug. These are old english or german designs and will hold heavy work. I made a small one for lighter work out of ash and the lg one out of hard maple. The lg will hold what a good size man can pick up. Anyway mabe this will help. I hear the train got to go .

Hi Chris, sorry I didn't quite understand did you mean you have the Panavise 400 or the Rock Positioner?

I would be interested to hear from others who might have the Rock Positioner. I should be receiving my Rock Positioner in the next few days. I plan to mount it on the side of my workbench. I have a block of basswood just waiting for it!
Thanks for your comments, and thank you, North Wind I don't mean to hijack your thread.

I have the rock and it works well for what I use it for. But the biggest pieces that I have put on it were approx. 6"x6"x8". I use palm chisels and knives on it and have never used my long handled bigger chisels with it.

I also have the rock, I got it so I could do wood spirits in birch. The first thing I discovered was the 1" post was to short and the finger tightning knob was not good enough for larger wood using mallet tools. I fabricated a new handle and longer bolt and made a longer 1" post, now it works just fine.

Thank you, Lance & Skip, for your input--I too, plan to carve small, to medium carvings and mountain men/woodspirits in cottonwood. I have some really nice dry cottonwood limbs to carve. Skip thanks for the info on revising the Rock, sounds like something I might need to do also.
Thanks Again,
Kathy

I have the panavise 400 with a panavise post. I believe the rock positioner is a panavise 400 with a non panavise post. Or they both get the base from the same source.

Here's one that I want to build, this is off a Owlhause's picture trail page. Should be stout enough to hold most carvings.
Check it out. http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...33&uid=1835407
