Default Have you heard of this knife?

Hi, I had a contact from a person asking the following question:

"I need a round blade I think it's called a scop? Not sure but its for rounding out stuff like if you were carving a mask or a shoe or something of this nature."

I have not heard of this type of knife before, I am sure some of you have, could you please help explain it to me and point me in the right direction to help my friend?

Greg

Lee Valley has a scorp by beebe listed on their website if that is what you are asking about
http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.a...332,44073&ap=1

Hook knives are also handy when hollowing something out say for example a ladle or spoon.

I've got a Flexcut scorp and they have limited use. The gouge part is turned around and you draw it toward you--kind of an "L" shaped tool. Kinda cute, unique, and once in awhile, it's just the right tool for a task. A bit difficult to sharpen...

If that's to be used for larger projects like chair seats and dough bowls, there is another tool called an "inshave". It's like a drawknife bent into a "U" shape. A bent or hook knife like those used on Northwest Native carvings has a longer handle that can be grasped with two hands for better leverage.

Haida style hook knives have long handles. Pacific Northwest carvers like Bill Reid and Robert Davidson have developed them.
Check them out on our links page.
