| | Great new toy and another question about a pocket knife. I just wanted to say, I just received my new razor knife from Rick. Can't say enough good things about it. I really feel lucky getting it. The pocket knife question. On a whim I bid on a Boker Treeline Whittler on ebay. As it turns out I was the only bidder, so now I own one. Does anyone know anything about this brand? Is it any good?
Thanks

| | Re: Great new toy and another question about a pocket knife. Hi Keith,
My husband used to collect old knives so I can tell you that Boker brand has been around for a long time. Beyond that I don't know much more. Things change, I hope it's still American made....you know how that goes. I know nothing about it as a carving knife. But someone on here certainly will. You might google it too. |

| | Re: Great new toy and another question about a pocket knife. Boker is a fine knife. Most are made in Solingen Germany and the ones that I have and have seen, are made with carbon steel (what type, I don't know) blades. I'm guessing they are made in the same factory as Henckels and Hen and Roosters, because the frame shape is identical as is the jigging pattern on those that have bone handles. As is the shape and size of the shield. They may share the same steel with Hen and Roosters, but not the Henckels. Henckels are stainless (very good stainless).

| | Re: Great new toy and another question about a pocket knife. Some may very well have been, or be, American made. I am not all that well versed on Boker history or even present practices. I only spoke from limited personal esperience. Knife makers tend to move things around these days. Several of them have knives made in several different countries. Figuring out where something is made is difficult. For instance Case says their knives are American made, but at least one of the steels they use is exclusive to Japan. So is it truly American made? Switch to cars. Certain models of Fords and Chevies are made in Canada and Mexico while some models of Toyota are made in the U.S. Am I confused? You bet! Sorry for the rant, but many thanks for the opportunity.

| | Re: Great new toy and another question about a pocket knife. It does get confusing Edo, and what I was implying was that I hoped it wasn't being made in China at this point. We have some nice Henkles kitchen knives that were made in Germany. Now some are made in China and that is sad. I am to the point where I won't buy stuff made in China if I can help it.
Speaking of Henkles, I also have a couple of old Henkles carving gouges and they are great. (even though I mostly power carve these days) Those old gouges are a treasure and they are not made anymore. |

Anyway don't feel alone about not buying Chinese. My wife who is of Chinese decent, but American, refuses to buy anything Chinese too. Sometimes she is forced to by cirumstances and gets really upset.
You want to see her really mad, check her out after I've bought a Chinese pocket knife. I can't resist a good knife, and they do make some good ones. Some lousy ones too. |
