Don't want to rain on your parade, but before you buy it, hold a Buck knife in your hand like you're doing a paring cut--holding the knife in curled fingers and steadying your hand with your thumb on the wood and pulling the knife towards you. You might find the lock end of the handle digging into the side/heel of your hand.

I saw the knife too, and I thought well take the old Buck knife that I haven't used in years and reshape the blade. But I tried the motions of carving on a piece of scrap wood and found the handle to be annoying. And also, the Buck knife is too heavy. Maybe the Folding Murphy Knife is lighter.

So I made a detail knife with the same thickness and shape of the Buck Knife and just eliminated the "bump" on the end. It fits my hand perfectly. A few other people tried it too and liked it. Then I added a piece of reciprocating saw blade that I cut and sharpened to the shape I wanted and I had a nice and light 3/4" detail knife.

I might be wrong about my whole take on the Folding Murphy Knife on Rockler's website, but I didn't want to spend 30 bucks on a knife that'll be sitting in the drawer. I got one of them already! LOL

Cliff,
I just got a Flexcut Carvin' Jack for my birthday, and I like it! Six different tools in one folding pocket-size knife! My wife gave it to me a few days early, so I've been using it on Goody's Santa.
Normally I'd be using my knives made by Rick at Little Shavers, which I love--incredible knives! But this is a different animal all together and happens to be something I can use carving in my easy chair while watching TV. It has a V tool, 3 curved blades, a strait knife blade and a chisel.
Rick's knives I use all the time in my carving shop area and would be lost without them! They won't be replaced by the Carvin' Jack, but for portability traveling, and sitting in my easy chair at night, I'm thrilled to have the Carvin' Jack!

I have plenty of fixed blade knives but sticking one in my pocket to carve with while in the woods, during breaks, etc. is not a good idea IMO.

Compared to the Oar Carver this is a great buy and since I like my Murphy bench knife I think it should be a quality folding carving knife. The locking blade also makes it safer than my home modified Imperial Stockman.

As for spending 30 bucks on a knife that sits in a drawer, I collect pocket knives and have spent far more for knives that I never intend to use.

I use to buy tools to upset my little bride but since she is carving now, I buy what WE want.

Not meant to upset any one but a one bladed pocketknife is really useless to me. lLearned in Scouts, to carry at least a two bladed knife and usually carried several knives.

I look for the types of blades and the comfort of handling the knife when carving. Mostly the comfort part comes first. I have several knives sitting in drawers that were neat but no comfortable handling while carving. Nothing worse than a sore hand carving.
