| | Got Gloves Anyone have a suggestion on a good glove that you cannot cut through????
I had a little accident this afternoon and cut through the glove I was wearing on my left hand that was holding the piece I was working on. Needless to say I am the new owner of 6 nice stitches and a healthy emergency room bill.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know! I was wearing one of the yellow kevlar gloves with the blue rubber grippers on it. I guess it wasn't quite strong enough.
Be safe and happy carving!
Blake

| | Re: Got Gloves Kevlar...available through many woodcarving suppliers. They wear out too though, so you've got to watch them. I bought mine at Woodcraft about one hour from here so I could try it on and get a good fit.
Sorry about your accident. The glove does cost a lot less than all of that.

| | Re: Got Gloves Blake .. Sorry about your accident ... I hope everything will heal quickly ...
Never did any damage with the knife .. but a table saw cost me a trip to the emergency room once on my thumb ...
I guess Ia'm chicken .. I use only a 1 1/8 blade knife when I carve the little fellows .. so I can carve slowly ...
Please heal quickly

| | Re: Got Gloves Thanks Thor and Gene! I think it comes with the territory! I have had some other nicks and cuts, but this one got me. At least it was in a "fatty" part of my hand where it didn't do real damage! Yeah, maybe I should go to a smaller knife. I'm going to have to find me a strong glove. I wonder if they make them out of meshed steel????? Hmmmmm......
Thanks again for the well wishes! I'm sure it will be healed by the Hickory show later in the year! Hahaha
Thanks! Let me know if you run across a good glove!

| | Re: Got Gloves I would try a "fish fillet" glove from Wal-Mart sporting goods department or from some other sporting goods store. They have a stainless steel inner-core covered with kevlar. They seem a lot more cut resistance than the plain kevlar.
Good luck,

| | Re: Got Gloves I would suggest the Whizard II glove made by Wells Lamont, many sell it including my website, Woodcraft and others.
I started carrying the glove because I kept needing more gloves as I lost them or ruined them. It is the glove that I use. A little more expensive than the yellow glove but well worth it.
I have sliced myself countless times with full protection. It does not work for punctures though, ..... Don't ask how I know
Here is my link, so that you can see the glove I am talking about (it is the "Our Best Kevlar Glove) http://www.georgiacarver.com/Safety.html

| | Re: Got Gloves Blake, sorry about your cut hand. If it were me I would be glad it wasn't my knife hand! Tells you where my priority is. I bought the Walmart kevlar glove and wasn't happy with strecthing and non fit feel. I then used a leather glove until I was at the Wichita Wood Carvers show and tried on one of kevlar wrapped stainless wire glove that The Woodcraft Shop was selling. I have a large and long fingered hand and they had a tight fitting glove that fit. The first kevlar glove that did. I've been using it since. I'm careful about putting it on and taking it off as I don't want it to stretch. I like the leather glove a lot but worried about the coming slip. I was noticing that although I didn't know when and how I was getting knicks in the leather glove from carving. The glove is more expensive than the "fish" glove but in my opinion well worth it.
The "fish" glove doesn't begin to compare to the Woodcraft bought glove. |

| | Re: Got Gloves I am using the Woodcraft sold glove as well, it is the Whizard handguard II from Wells Lamont. It is the same glove that I mentioned in my post below. I agree with xsailer, it is an awesome glove. |

Some Walmart stores carry them and you can find them online for about $10-$12. You can still puncture yourself with the glove but it handles slicing cuts very well.

| | Re: Got Gloves I agree that the Woodcraft glove is the one to get. Costs about 20.00 but compare that to the emergency room costs and it's pretty cheap! No matter what glove you buy none of them are 100 percent "cut proof". I wrap the thumb and first two fingers with finger tape for extra protection. The wife sews the wraps onto the glove so the tape doesnt slip off. This will exgtend your gloves life almost forever. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
