| | gloves what an idiot.......well, here goes......and I know I'm gonna get beat up a little bit over this but that's ok......i long ago learned to leave my feelings at home.......I was over at woodcraft couple of days ago wif me wife buying some more toys, got a couple of knives and a palm tool, and ran my hands through a 25% off bin of henry taylor tools and bought another one of those........but i started looking at the carving gloves....checking out the sizes on my little mitts....one was so small I couldn't get my fingers past the palm......one was so big i felt like i was swimming in it.......of all the gloves i tried on, none of them fit....I almost bought one of the larger ones but put it back......and as I'm putting it back I'm thinking, " you know you can only carve so long without protection and you're gonna slip and slice one of those sausages you call fingers....." well, you know how that goes. I was working on a small carving last night taking my time and trying to be sooooo careful, and of course i slipped and put the blade of one of those new knives into the tip of my middle finger......ouch......blood all over that piece of basswood and me trying to stem the flow with a kleenex, and my wife says, "say, did you cut yourself ?"....and, of course, you know it had to be the "swiss made" knife, already as sharp as it could be when it came out of the package, and this idiot had just been honing that turkey to make sure it was really sharp........(they say you only get hurt by the tool that is dull)........ well now thats a bunch of baloney if I ever heard it.....that knife went into that finger tip like it was soft flesh......oh yeah, it was soft flesh........anyway, long story short (whoops, too late) anybody know where I can order a good glove on line and how do you get the right size ?......anyone know of a good outlet .........
thanks for any reply's and thanks for listening to my rant .......

ps....I'm still having fun !! |

| | Re: gloves you may want to call rick at little shavers and he or teresa may be able to get you fitted in one over the phone.you may need to measure your hand around the knuckles and tell them but i am not sure i would talk to them and tell them what you have encountered and go from there they are very helpful

| | Re: gloves I have been using the fish fillet gloves (Walmart or any outdoor store) for years. But, may take a look at the gloves Hi Ho mentioned. I have wide palms and short fingers. Hard to fit into the standard 3 sizes. |

| | Re: gloves Welcome to the club!!! You can now attest that you are really "into" your carving. Okay, I'll be nice. Hope it didn't hurt too long and hasn't slowed down your carving.

| | Re: gloves If it'll make you feel better, I don't wear a glove either. Can't stand 'em. Wife bought me two dozen kevlar gloves and 23 of them have never been used. The 24th was used a bouple times. Guess I'll just have to cut a finger off before I learn. |

| | Re: gloves Well if anyone ever wants to prove its your carving they just have to check the DNA - almost all of my carvings have at least a drop or two. I have however finally bought some kevlar gloves so that shouldn't be the case anymore. |

| | Re: gloves I got a size Large Kevlar glove off the bay and it seemed a little tight on the fingers but too long on each. I wore it anyway thinking I need to pick one up locally but this is better than nothing for now. Well, as it turns out, the weave will rework itself slightly from use, and now it fits pretty well.
I am picking up one potentially bad habit, though. On a few cuts, like rounding the end of a blank for the top of a head, I find it is easy to start using my gloved hand like a chopping block (not really chopping, but pushing the gouge cross grain on a corner, for example).
