Hello there.
I saw somewhere how Dremel makes a pistol grip attachment for their hand held rotary tool. I have just such a tool and I thought this would be a handy thing to have. So I made one.
This is useful as it removes your hand from the motor itself and so on long jobs when the tool can heat up, the heat is not a problem as it may bother you to hold it when it is hot. Also I find that when I have a good grip on the Dremel that my hand tends to cover the air vents and this tends to reduce the cooling efficiency.
When I bought this tool it came with a routing attachment designed to hold the tool at an even distance from the work surface. I removed the collar part that screws to the front of the Dremel and used this to make this pistol grip. I can still put the collar back in the routing attachment if I need to as I didn't need to alter it in any way.
Here is the attaching collar removed from the routing attachment. It fits in a one inch hole drilled the wood. I started by drilling the hole on a piece of pine 2" x 4". Once the basic shape is cut out on the band saw, I drilled a 1/4" hole for the carriage bolt. Then I made the cut down the center of the hole that allows the bolt to close on the collar once it is inserted. This center cut has to go beyond the hole down in to the handle for about 3/4" to allow the wood to close more securely on the plastic part. You can see the cut in the pic below.
Ready for some serious work.
You can also see in the first pic how I angled the drill a bit when I was carving the 1" hole so as to angle the Dremel downward just a bit. I think this is a better angle of attack for some jobs.
All in all, I like my new handle and think I will make others in different configurations of angle of attack for more specific uses. I hope you think this is a neat idea and build yourself something like it for your Dremel or moto tool.
All the best.
