Default Flexcut Starter kit

Does anyone know if the flexcut starter kit is worth it for a beginner, woodcraft has it on sale at this time an I am just starting to learn how to do some carvie but as of now I only have a couple of knifes to include a flexcut cutting knife, and a Flexcut Carvin' jack that was given to me for a present.

If you like the knife and Carvin' Jack, then the set should be good for you. Actually, you should like the kit better than the Carvin' Jack (comfort). I don't generally suggest "kits" as there are usually one or two tools that are rarely used. I have since learned to modify these to be more useful for me, but this has been trial and error on regrinding the tools.....not something that most would want to do.

Hawk,
Since you are ordering from Woodcraft, I would compare the flexcut set to the Pfeil set of palm tools. The prices are pretty close. If at all possible, it would be good to get some hands on carving/comparison. Keep in mind, flexcut tools flex, where as most other tools do not. You may find you like this option, or come to really not like it at all. I like my flexcuts, but love Pfeil. Just my opinion.
A call to Rick or Theresa is also an excellent idea. They are good people, with good tools and knowledge. They would never steer you wrong just to make a sale, and have a ton of respect on this board.
As you move from knives to palm tools; you must also consider stropping and sharpening options. Search the board and you will find a wealth of info on this subject. [All sharpening threads lead back to Rick]
Good luck, and Boy Howdy, do I remember how hard it was to make that first major puchase.
Jim

The Flexcut starter kit is a good one to start off with and You will use all of the edges starting out.
However, I agree with contacting Rick of little Shavers. He has the best Beginner's kit and well worth the price. Rick's beginner's kit will come to you sharp and ready to use.
I have nothing but respect for the Pfeil's tools but they do not come ready to use and that for a beginner is a minus.
Contact Rick at www.littleshavers.com. You won't go wrong there.
