| Well I did it. I'm not 100% happy with the results but close. Found out a lot goes into the making of a knife. I may be a bit premature as to the 100% happy since I've not yet used it. I would have used it today but it only took from 6:30 this morning to this minute 3:04 P.M. to get this post finished. I wish I was smarter on the computer but I know just enough to not stop. Hope the pictures are ok and would appreciate some REAL critiques. Last edited by xsailer; 04-04-2006 at 07:44 AM. |

Now that is really cool! I really like the way you integrated the handle and the blade protector!! Any chance of seeing the entire knife from stem to stern, so to speak? What kind of wood did you use, and what did you use for the blade?

I wish that I were more qualified to critique this beautiful work of art but my knife making experience is limited to the replacement of a handle only. Perhaps you will be lucky enough for Rick to notice your post! I do feel qualified to comment upon the lustrous beauty of that wood! If I didn't know better I'd say that it is was a precious jewel-quality polished stone. That is some lustre of a shine and constrasting of colors that you have there... and the eye of a winged predator to boot! Great work for a first and thanks for posting!

What a day! Been working all day to get this on the forum. The wood is Burled Maple and the blade, is as Rick suggests, a German produced Straight Razor. Making the blade was a REAL experience! Took the fingerprints right off my fingers sanding the blade down by hand. I started out on Flexcut knives so I like the blade type really well. So of course I had to have the cutting edge the same way and it agreed with Rick "the Man" razor technique. Put on two coats of Danish Oil and after drying added several layers of Polyurethane(spray). I remember in one of Rick's posts he commented on the difficulty of the wet finish picking up dust. Boy is he right. Everytime I sprayed I picked up something. DARN! DARN! or something like that. Gosh I really appreciate the comments....thanks. By the way I'm on Rick's knife list and can't wait after hearing all of the others comments and seeing his "Sold" list. Hurry up Rick. |

Shoot! a knife that beautiful doesn't have to carve to be worth it. Kinda like a custom made handgun - so cool that it's worth more unfired. Super lookin knife. Thanks for the photos, Tom H
