Default Finally...my tools ARE done!

Here's a pic of my home made tools that are almost done. They have one coat of Poly-Wipe, with two more coats of Poly-wipe and sanding in between to go. Then I will final grind/hone them as needed again. So far, I've been able to cut pine leaving nice, paper thin shavings, and they seem to hold their edge well.

On top is a 1/4" bent chisel--reground from carpenter's bevel
1/2" skew--ground from old file.
3/4" #4 gouge--ground from old file.
3/4" chisel--ground from old file.

All have red oak handles.

Bob

Nice work Bob! Half the fun of carving is in making the tools.

Nice job Bob. Love the handle shape, look comfortable. Ain't it great what you can do with old stuff....wonderful new tools recycled from old files and a bit of wood for handles. Well done.

All done! Now I can put some wood on the other end of the tools!

Hope to have a small sign done by the end of the weekend.

Bob

Bob,
Is the handle on the tool fourth from the right a "Keen Kutter"?
If it is, is the chisel original?

Hi Rick

The handle is not original. It and the chisel were in a box of tools from my Grandfather. There is no label on the handle. The chisel is stamped "Charles Buck Cast Steel". I put the handle on the chisel about 20 years ago, but it was dull as a butter knife and I never used it. I saw it laying in the tool box a while ago, and figured I'd put it to use in carving. So, I reground the bevel and honed it nice and sharp!

From my research when I searched on the Internet, Charles Buck split off from the Buck Brothers tool company and started his own tool making company in 1873. He subsequently died in 1905. So, that makes the chisel at least 100 years old! Don't know anything about the handle. What's a "Keen Kutter"--manufacturer's name?

KeenKutter was a E.C. Simmons trademark used on everything from Buggy whips to wood planes. They also trademarked carving tools.
This is about a #9 gouge from my collection.

Rick,

I can see the similarity in the handle. But I can't say for sure whether the handle is a Keen Kutter. The tool is definitely a "keen kutter" though! LOL

Carve yourself a great 4th of July!!
