Default Dremel Shoe polisher power hone

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has any info about the Dremel shoe polisher that Harold Enlow converted into a power hone? I just picked one up this weekend and was curious what Harold used for the strop part. Thanks!

I made one last year. I made one side a buffer and the other a leather covered MDF wheel. It is a good portable unit to use. The shaft is a bit small and the wheels wobble a little sometimes but easily straighten by just a little off center tap.

Kenny,

I have one also. Right now I just have a small cotton buffing wheel on it but I want to do something different like maybe a felt wheel or a leather wheel. I'm just not sure what would be the best yet. I think the cotton wheel was rounding over some of my gouges so I haven't really been using it. I was wondering if anyone knows the rpms for this dremel shoe polisher? I read somewhere that for the leather you do not want to really go over 600 rpms. I hope you get some more responses to your question.

Hi Sam,

go to ebay and look at "shoe polisher" for a picture. There are several manufacturers.

On mine I took off both of the shoe polishers and replaced them with one regular cotton buffer you would use on a grinder and as I said earlier a glued on Leather covered Mdf wheel. Don't go much bigger than setting the Dremel on a 2x6 wood base because there is not much torque on the dremel motor.

Wheel diameters are 6". Special fitting is necessary as I said to fit the wheels on. I went to a tool store and bought some regular grinder shaft extensions and I think I had to buy bushing to marry the smaller dremel shaft to the extensions.

Bob,
Thanks for the awesome pics. I am going to try to use the metal insert that was in the cone maybe to help with attaching the wheels. Thanks again
Kenny

Kenny,

So, what kind of wheels are you going to use on yours?

If I were doing it over and knowing the low torque of the Dremel I would get a hard felt wheel. On the other side it would seem redundant to have a cloth buffer. I think I would probably stick with a leather covered wheel. As far as RPM problems I've got a 9.5" leather glued wheel at about 1100 RPM and had no problems. Previous thread discussions are in files concerning this question and for the most part favorable.

I must say that I'm happy with the setup I have now and will not change it anytime soon.
