| | Re: drawing for lay out tool Elwoodtroll, you have already drawn it , or are you just looking for the dimensions.
For the one I made, I just guessed at the dimensions from a catalogue picture.
Mine is 5 1/2" lg x 1 1/2" high at the highest point,
It's about 1 1/2" wide, the rest of the dimensions are whatever scrap pieces I had lying around, plus a thumbscrew to hold the pencil in place and a small diameter bolt and wingnut for the pivot point.

| | Re: drawing for lay out tool It's called various things, in one catalogue (not a good picture) it's listed under "Measuring/Marking gauge" and called a centering device. I guess It's mostly used by "egg carvers" wooden ones that is, but it could be used for other types of carving as well.
There no limits to what size you can make it, if you want to place a mark on a carving and maintain the same height mark at other locations on the carving it's a handy gauge.
The site I got my dimensions from is no longer showing the gauge in use or I would post it for you.

| | Re: drawing for lay out tool Gee Kenny when was that, I don't remember seeing it, or I woudn't have gone to all the trouble of using up what little bit of grey cells that I once had figuring out the dimensions.
Anyway Elwoodtroll here's a web site showing what they call a "versatile marker" same principle but much blockier (if that's a word) . http://www.texaswoodcarvers.com/Tool...atile%20Marker

| | Re: drawing for lay out tool And if you wanted to just mark eggs for carving here's a neat setup for doing so. http://www.carversedge.com/projects.htm
Of course he might have it patent on it.
