| | DIY belt sharpener I had a chance to try out a sharpener built on a belt sander which I really really like. It is similar to the one sold at chippingaway except that it came equipped with a tool holder. Unable to shell out the 400 smackaroos for it, I opted for the homebuilt version by ElWoodTroll's Cave Dwellers Implement Inc.
Today I started tooling up and commenced design and fabrication of the yoke assembly.
I know this is a carving group and not machinist but if anyones interested I'd be happy to share pics here or if that is verboten in this forum I'll just post them on my blog.
The picture shows a modified version of the commercial one. The belt path has been modified to provide a longer bevel. I don't know if this a feature that would attract most carvers. It seems to me that the heel is almost nonexistant when ground this shallow. I can see the old timers wincing
Let me know what you think. I've included a picture of the modified setup.

| | Re: DIY belt sharpener I'm sorry I guess I wasn't very clear about that. The sharpener pictured belongs to another club member. It comes stock with a 1/4 horse motor frame #48. It comes with tool holder attachment and is available from Don Burghardt. for more details about both sharpeners..... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ower+Sharpener
This is the one that we modified the belt path.
The one I will be making will incorporate this design and will be mounted on a separate shaft with a stropping and buffing wheel.
After I got started building mine,I found out you could buy just the frame at "chipping away" and save a ton of money.

| | Re: DIY belt sharpener OK, I'm confused. The one pictured is not the one you're making, but if I follow the link, I will find links that lead me off on a chase for more parts to build something out of what? I did find the link to the framework, and that price seems reasonable for the frame and pullies. Are you buying the leather strop from them as well?
I would love to find an inexpensive way to have a power strop. I surely have a motor around here somewhere that I could hook up, so if you have a blog entry that explains whether you are using the store bought frame work to create one with some extra motor parts, that would be so fine.
Thanks,
Thor |

Thanks,
Thor | The commercially available unit comes with a motor that runs at 1725 rpms.
If you don't have a motor that runs that slow. you can usually find one at the discount lumber and hardware for about $60. Add the comercially built frame for $75... a few more $$ for belts....
Myself... I prefer a little slower speed so..my home built stropping wheel and belt sharpener and buffing wheel will all be mounted on a secondary shaft running 600rpms

| | Re: DIY belt sharpener yep,
id like to know that,
i got some 10 inch cast iron wheels, but the machining work on them to hold good bearings would probably run more than the hole machine..
its not that im that stingy with my bucks, there just ain't that many of them on service retirement dollars | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
