| | Detail knife & carving show Going to Dayton show on Saturday, would like to pick up a detail knife, I have a roughing knife, but want something smaller for detail work...seen in a post about a Lyon's knife, anyother choices...guy in my club has a real nice one, thinks he picked it up from a guy in Canton, Ohio, but not sure, small flat blade, and blade runs thru the handle, handle made of maybe COCObolo, heavy, but cuts nice, but not sure of the guy or the brand...so any input is grateful....excited about the show...Dennis

| | Re: Detail knife & carving show I highly recommend the Bütz detail knife. It's "B" in this: http://www.woodcraft.com/InhancedIma...?FamilyID=1336
It took a bit of time to get it really sharp, as the very fine tip has a tendency to twist as one sharpens it, but I use it for fine detail around eyes, etc.

The knife you're talking about might be a Warther knife ... made in Dover, Ohio, just south of Canton.
There's a museum there featuring Mooney Warther's unbelievable train carvings, and the family still makes the knives there -- both kitchen knives and some carving knives.
I have one of the 1932 model detail carving knives -- loved it until I broke the point off in a knot (shouldn't have been using that knife in that situation) and I haven't been able to get it quite right again.
Here's their link: www.warthers.com

| | Re: Detail knife & carving show Dave Lyons will be at the Dayton Artistry in Wood show this weekend, November 10 -11 and makes excellent knives including detail knives. Dunkel Knives will also be there along with several tool vendors, all who carry various knives including Denny, Helvie or you take your pick, so come to the show, look at all the knives and other tools and wood supplies and especially the very best in wood carvings. Also look for me and Jim OH who will be among the almost 200 carvers set up to participate in this show. |

| | Re: Detail knife & carving show Dennis, I absolutely LOVE the Dave Lyons brand knives, they are the only ones I use. The detail knives are awesome! They take a lot of abuse, I've been know to break the tips off knives (big ones, not the detail knives).....never had that happen with a Dave Lyons knife....and I really give them a work out, I carve a lot!
They hold their edge well with just stropping, I never have to stone sharpen them, which is what I've had to do with other knives I've wrecked! Just the occasional swipes on a 2000 grit wet/dry automotive 'sand paper' and then my normal stropping has taken care of any little nicks I've put in the blade edge.....which doesn't happen very often.
I do strop a lot, I got in that habit right from the start. I carve about twenty minutes then strop about twenty times, each side. Keeps knives and gouges razor sharp.
Whatever brand you decide on, let us know what your opinion of them is! Have fun at the Show! Deborah
