| | Re: Detail Knife I agree with Deborah, Dave Lyons knives are hard to beat. They're well designed, come sharp, and stay sharp. What more could you ask for? |

Here's a link to a website that'll give you leads to vendors for the different tools. http://www.woodcarvers.org/tools.htm
You're right--it could get expensive, but if you take time and look around, you can get a good deal on a knife. Check the links on the website I gave you(BTW--not all the links are current on that website--most are though), and then use Google to do some research. Put in the name and the model and seee what comes up--take your time. There are significant differences in prices between vendors--and shipping and handling costs will also affect your price. So, keep an eye out for that. If you want, PM me, and I'll even double check to see if there's any better prices. I'm sure people here will point you in the right direction too, once you narrow down your choice.

By the way, check with Pfeil about the roughing knife. Tell them you don't want to buy a detail knife of theirs because of what happened--for the price of an e-mail, what can you lose?!?!

| | Re: Detail Knife For fine detail I use my Old Reliable Box cutter. In the 40 years I've been carving I've never found anything that comes close to cutting really fine detail. A few strops on the leather and a new blade will last a long time or at least until you bang it into something. When that happens just reverse the blade, strop and your on your way again. Carvers see me carving with it, shake their heads in disbelief then walk over and spend ten times the price I paid for a knife only half as good. I was in Lowes the other day and saw the one I use priced at around 2.50. and that included some extra blades. Not a bad buy for a really good knife. |

| | Re: Detail Knife Any FIXED blade utility knife--not the retractable or folding kind. It should be the kind where you need to take the screw out of the handle to change the blade. Stanley and Warner are two brands that come to mind. Buy a package of the heavy duty blades, and a knife and go home--strop the blade and carve. If the blade gets a knick--toss it and use a new one. The utility knife can be found in any hardware store, big-box home improvement store, paint store, etc.
Here's a link to one on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-10-209.../dp/B00002X209
But buy one of the no-name brands and you'll get the same thing for less money.
