Dang, you guys are too technical for me.

I have received V-tools from suppliers that come apart while buffing.
The intersection of the two sides is sometimes reduced too much and results in a crack.

Broken sides of a V-tool are also very common, but I believe it has more to do with how they are sharpened than stresses applied by the wood.

The v's I've messed up were maybe 1/8 (very thin) and 3/8. I knew it was my fault, I torqued it too much, just as soon as I did it.10 years from now I won't do that anymore!

Rick,
Thanks! I'll quit blaming myself 100%. It was the manufacturers fault at least 20 or 30%. They should know better than to build such a fine tool! You know, I never once thought it was the tool's fault! I might just have to have duplicates in my v tools, so I don't miss them so much while You're straitening out my fiascos! I'll get a gentler touch with time! p.s. I wasn't opening paint cans with them, I was carving oak!

Keep talking as I got some b-day money from the wife (we have a joint account, how does that work?) that's either going towards some carving tools or a new 3 wood. I'm currently looking at about 3 Denny gouges on Rick's sight. My question is do I want the Ortel, Stetson or both? I'm taking this as a thumbs up for Denny.

The Ortel is the more popular of the two.
The 5/16 V-gouge is one of my favorites.

Rick, after just purchasing a Henry Taylor 25 mm "V", I found that while trying to "tune" it, the right wing would NOT meet the keel where the left did, so I ground both back square and started from scratch. It was then I found the right wing was thinner than the left.....hmmmmm. Any tips on getting this one squared away? I've got the keel honed in by hand but will have to wait till next week when our club meets to get at the Tormak for the wings. From looking around on the web, it seems that this may be a fairly common problem with the hand forged tools like HT's. I do have a fair number of HT's and they all needed honing when first purchased......good tools, but this is new to me.

This "one thin wing" could also be a reason for some breakage, on"V"s if this is as common as it may be.

Al, if Rick doesn't have a solution(the miracle tool man),. I would pack that tool off to Henry Taylor, it doesn't matter wether you are the first, third or whatever owner, from what I know about the company they will replace it since the problem originated as a manufacture error.

OG, I've given some thought to returning it to the place where I purchased it (new), but that is way down in Ohio...700+ miles from here, but that return to HT maybe a better soultion. anybody know an address for them???

Al, I see Liferescue beat me to it.
Yah you could sent it to the outfit that you bought it from, they might replace or they might just send it on to Henry Taylor. My suggestion still stands though send it direct to HT.
Here's their home page url just in case.
