| | Denny tools? Of course just getting started I am interested in purchasing decent tools.
Also, instead of Big D, maybe I should have chosen the name "Po Boy", if you catch my drift. I am not really a cheapskate, mind you. But I don't want to strain my relationship with my goodwife... you understand, I'm sure!
Anyhow - I am trying to be frugal, but at the same time I want to be able to enjoy my carving.
I was looking at the Denny chisels, gouges, etc in the Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers catalog.
Really wondering if they are worth the investment.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks. |

| | Re: Denny tools? The Denny tools are as good as they come in my opinion. I have 3 of his knives and those are the only knives I use. I only have a couple of his gouges so far (only because I have had other brands for quite a while). You can't beat Denny tools for edge holding. Very good tools, money well spent. |

...have one Denny knife, but IMHO it doesn't compare to a Helvie or a Dunkel... |

What about the gouges, v-tools, chisels?
Does anyone have any input on them specifically? |

| | Re: Denny tools? Big D, some tools that are a little more expensive are what you can tell your wife are "lifetime investments"! There are many types of knives that are great and most of us can't get enough knives so it's usually a matter of what feels comfortable to you. I have some great tools made by the best and I can tell you that the Denny tools are the "best of the best" and not even as expensive as the foreign tools. The only thing you may not know is that the Denny "V" gouges are not sharp pointed "V" parting tools but a round gouge in the bottom. They are great tools but if you want some V tools that make more of a v-point you'll also need to get some in a Pfeil or Stubai and my preference in v-tools are hand made by Gil Drake at Drakeknives.com. My preference in knives is Ron Wells and they are inexpensive as well as super sharp-made from moly-high speed steel. You can buy several Wells knives for the price of one of the others!
Hope that helps, Denny tools are great.

| | Re: Denny tools? Just joining in on the band wagon....You will not go wrong with Denny tools. I have expensive and inexpensive tools and I still use my Denny gouges and knives, especially the two small detail knives and the several different gouges. In fact I bought extras of the small detail knives to have on hand if something should happen to them.
I would bet that in the future when you're able to get more "expensive" tools you'll still use your Denny's as I do. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
