Default Denny Gouge's & V for Xmas ?...sorry....

I have figured I am going to ask Santa for the Denny tools, instead of the Flexcuts, as noted in previous post....I have a set of basic 1 Ramelson's and a set of Dockyard U & 2 v tools, should I add the Denny set as a 3,5,7,9 & 11 as someone recommended, or isn't all of these useful in the set?....not had any 1/2 larger tools, so not sure, figure the 1/2 3 should be a work horse, but not sure about the others, or uses....can someone enlighten me?....tks to all in advance.....Dennis

It really hurts my tool loving soul to say this, but think if you get the 3,5,7, and 9 Denny's and a V tool, you can dispense (at least for the time being) with the 11.

On the other hand, I've found 11s to be much better than 9s for carving out the eyes on caricatures - less likely to have a corner bite into the wood and rip out a big chip. Disclaimer: could be my lousy technique...

Don't think so ... Most 9's will to that, but the Denny's have enough (I don't know what to call it) shucks, maybe enough, I still don't know what to call it. Enough curve? The sides go up far enough (that was real technical) so the corners don't bite in. Try again Ed .... Maybe they make a full semi-circle? Anyway, the Denny 9 doesn't wreck the socket when doing an eye. I fell so stupid!!!!! Nothing unusual, maybe a cup of tea or a beer will help. That being said, I like the Stubai 11's a lot, I'd better, I've got (as soon as I count) six of them (I think I need help).

Would sweep have been the correct term?

Good choice of tools Dennis. I would recommend Rick at Littleshavers also. Now for what Claude and Ol Ed was talking about, I have notice several carvers have rounded the very corners of some of their gouges so as not to tear or bite out areas of their carvings. Vicki Bishop had one and for the life of me, I don't remember what sweep or size of the gouge.

Did that explamation sound right. Not much in the technical department. Rounded corners is the best I could come up with.

Never tried one but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Claude, I have a gorilla technique and it ain't pretty. Sometimes it works but mostly it don't. Guess it can be called a "bad habit", in carving.

dennis,

call rick at little shavers, tell him what kind of carving your setting up the tool set for, he will guide you to the most needed tools for that venue,

not sure how much this come to answering your question on which tools, but rick can custom grind any tool, to make preform for a better standard,

Hello,

If you carve caricatures, do not leave off the # 11 veiners. Stubai makes the best #11 tools for caricaturists, but the Denny's are virtyually identical. You can drill a hole with either brand!!! I would start out with the #3, 5 7 and 9 at 1/2" width, add th #11 at 2mm, 4mm and 6mm, and finish the set with the Ortell V-Tool.

Good Luck,
Dan Heine
