Default delta 1'' belt sander

Just bought a delta 1'' belt sander at the flea market for 3$ .
the moter was frozen(looks like it was under water )I brought it home and oiled it up a bit and it seem to be working.Do you think it would be good for sharpening and what grit belt would be good for sharpening it came with a course belt but it looks to course .for sharpening

its 1/4 horse motor @ 3400 rpm

I guess I need to watch heat build up and have some water handy to cool off what ever I'm sharpening.

any advise would be great

I have one of those with a 5" disk sander as part of the unit. I use mine to sharpen my chisels and it works great. I know....it goes the wrong direction to what all the xperts say but it works for me and thats whats important. The belt thats on it is the one that came with it however it's grit is worn off just about down to the fabric and thats what makes it work! I built a little attachment that holds the end of the handle of the chisel in a pocket that I can move in and out from the belt to get the angle I want. Keeping the end of the tool in that pocket I can turn it to get an even sweep for curved profiles with no problems. It only takes a second to tune up a dull chisel and a quick trip to the motorized strop puts it back into use in no time.

I have one and actually use the disk the most, but do use the belt when making knives etc etc.....use it for regular shop projects as much as wood carving . (it will heat up a knife blade in a hurry tho!)

Lynn, I'd be interested in seeing some pics of the attachment you built to hold your chisels for sharpening on your Delta sander.
Not that I have a Delta sander , but there has been some discussion here on jig's for belt sanders, so just wondered what your version looks like.
I'm always interested in seeing what type of devices/jigs other people have come up with for any type of belt sander/grinder.
In my case I have a 1" belt sander/grinder that I built myself and I use a simple jig made from hardwood flooring strips to position the chisel butts in relation to the belt.

Cheers
OG

Thanks for the responses.

the one I got dose not have the 5'' disk(wish it did)

I was wondering if they make a leather

belt for it ? the finest grit I could find
was 220. still a little to course

lynn I would also like to see some pics of your sharpening jig.

and I wonder if I could rewire it to make it run the other way?

nothing like buying something for 3$ that is going to be so usefull!!!!

Stickman, the Woodcraftshop sells leather belts that I think will fit that machine.

What size belt does that have on it? I'm thinking 30"?
You should have no problems finding aftermarket belts in grits you may find more suitable. I would have to do some research but I seem to recall a lot of belts available from a knifemaking supplier. Off the top of my head I want to say the name was Jaansen?
My belt sander has 72" belts and I have to go to Des Moines to get belts locally and the selection in stock is pretty small.

Let me correct myself, it's Jantz Supply. They have a free catalog thats worth the time to request if you buy nothing from them.
Do google search the belts are at the end of their listings.

I purchased a 1" craftsman belt sander at an auction. My handy husband took it apart and turned the shaft so that it goes "backward" to sharpen chisels. We found a "rest" at the shopsmith site that he improvised for it. He was unable to turn the Delta one that I had around, the shaft has to be the same sides on both sides or it won't work.
