I just received my custom set of Del Stubbs nice and man o man right out of the package these are the sharpest tools I have ever seen. I placed the order back on my birthday, Del was busy and I had asked for some special stuff, I wanted them to have matching handle woods and for the handles to be left unfinished so I could add my own. He also took the time to use some amazing Claro Walnut Crotch for the handles. I am extremely pleased with them, also I just love the smell of Walnut .I have never really been completely happy with the name brand carving knifes, they are all good but each brand seems to be missing something another brand has got. It is this reason I started to make my own carving knives and not just for me I sell them as well. Well, I seen Del's knives posted on here by a fellow carver and loved them. From that first picture, I knew I would be buying a set. Del was very kind and extremely helpful answering all my questions, and I believe it was his wife who I also talked with and found to just as helpful if not more. He really did a great job everything I asked for exactly, I am very picky when I am buying something brand new. The tools are great (pictures below), they came unbelievably sharp and had nice sheaths included. I just got done carving a spoon from a basswood blank that came with the knives. Dang the Sloyd went through that basswood like a red hot knife through snow or a warm knife through butter if ya prefer.Over all I am in awe of these knives so well crafted, polished up and sharpened to the highest level. If your into carving and like nice looking tools I highly recommend Del Stubbs at Pinewood Forge. I have looked them over and over and haven't found any flaws or anything that could be wrong with them. I am now planning on buying a set of left handed hook knives, I hope some of ya find this (sort of a review) helpfull. Carl P.S These pictures are before I added my finish, and yes I know the pictures do not do the beauty of the wood and steel justice.

I will still be using my custom knives along with these, since these are more a heavy roughing and special purpose knives. Carl

Nice choices Carl. The #1 open sweep is a pretty new offering from Del. I am liking it more and more as I use it. I added a left hook to my tool bag too. I use it quite a bit less than the right, but when I need it I need it. I completely agree with you on Del's work....sharp and properly set for clean cuts and very very easy to maintain. WCI did an article on Del in Summer 2001....Del has a link to it. wci-1 Review Good carving...... (here are a couple of mine) Last edited by schwert; 11-18-2008 at 09:39 PM. |

Schwert how do you get your pics like that when ya post? I just end up with the little thumbnails that have to clicked on to enlarge. Also Del told me I recived some specially figured walnut others cannot request. When I order my left handed blades, thinking either try for a figured maple like the one you have posted below or I would really like some birdseye maple. Carl

Carl I link my images in from another host with the button in the header of the window where you type prior to submitting. I find thumbnails to be sort of a pain as they break up the flow of an article. I am not sure if you can put full sized images into a post with the local gallery. But here is a Buckthorn handle on Del's newest long long sloyd (the knife on the right, the other is a Rod Garcia SBT carver in Arctic Birch). ![]() He generally has a host of good burls and other woods on his tools. I have never made any special requests, but cannot complain about any wood he has sent me. You did get some nice Walnut. |

. I also worked very hard saving up the money for this purchase. Also if ya haven't had much experience working with tools with a hollow AKA Scandinavian grind, they are a bit more aggressive in wood removal a trait I like very much. Thank you for the compliments Thanks for the info about the pictures Schwert. Carl

Beautiful knives Carl. I have been thinking about picking up one of his "Harley" knives. Corey

Corey: I have both his Harley and the Stubby Harley and can't say enough good about them. The grind angle is so narrow that you won't believe how easily these knives just drift through the wood. I've found that the Stubby is just right for doing 90% of the work on a mini. Del and Mary are two of the nicest people you could deal with. Bob |
